usu english department { phase 1 - fall 2005 }
proposal .pdf
During phase 1, the development/planning phase, we as a set of teams mapped and evaluated the current site, researched key areas of webdesign, and surveyed students and faculty to find out what they wanted in a department website.
Then the design process began.
I worked in a group of five to assemble a first-class design and proposal, which was presented to the head of the department, Dr Jeffrey Smitten.
My role in this project was half designer, half researcher, half writer. As a team we put together a prototype design and developed it using Adobe InDesign. In the early stages of the project I was occupied with technical research. we had a lot of goals behind the design—specific ways we wanted it to work, things we wanted it to do once it was translated into html code. I researched those technical things (CSS positioning, dropdown menus) and used the information I found to back up our design choices.
As our proposal was taking shape, I took the position of editor-in-chief, reading through the 42-page proposal again and again, making improvements in style and mechanics. We submitted the proposal and a 30-minute presentation to the department on December 13, 2005. A month later we learned that it had been chosen to be implemented spring semester.
